How to get to BarcelonaA question many tourists usually ask themselves when they land at the airport is how to get to their destination. The most common thing to do is to take a cab and let him drive you to your hotel or sometimes the hotel has a busservice.
It does however often occur that airport is located far from the city and it will cost you a lot of money if you want to take a taxi.

That is why it is good to know what your best options are when arrive at a airport what is the fastest quickest way to get from there to the city.We will be looking at the what are the best ways to get from the airport to Barcelona´s city center.

Barcelona has 3 airports nearby which means logically the best way to travel from there on would vary from airport to airport. The biggest and most used airport in barcelona is the Barcelona airport we will first look at that one, what are the best ways to get to the city from terminal 1 and terminal 2 after that we will take a look at the other two airports.

    Barcelona Airport

This is the biggest airport in Barcelona and also the most used one, it normally takes you 20 minutes or something to get to the city centre. All of the following options are good ways to reach the centre.
You can find more information on your prefered way of transportation here.

    Taxi

A taxi is a quick, convenient way to get to the city centre, also it is cheaper then you would expect, this because the airport is not to far from the city. It does not matter if you are at terminal 1 or 2 you can find taxi's anywhere. However, if you want to call a cab this is the number: (0034) 93 303 3033. The whole journey is about 20/30 minutes depending a bit on the time and road conditions. Keep in mind that terminal 1 is 4 km further than terminal 2 which will add another 5 minutes. The price of the taxi is around 25/30 Euros and there is also a additional fare for the bags, you can find that listed in the taxi.In general taxi's are very handy and reliable and therefore a good choice after a long flight.

    Aerobus

The aerobus is a expres service that takes you from the airport to the city centre. The aerobus leaves from both terminal 1 and 2, to bus takes you to placa Espanya or Placa Catalunya, both are good to get off and then take the underground.Tickets cost 5.05 Euros for a single and 8.65 for a return which is valid up till 9 days.
Here you can find the timetable of the Aerobusservice.

    Airport night bus

Nitebus N17 enables you to take the bus at night if you want to. The bus travels from T1 to the city centre, the service starts at 21:50 untill 4:50 am.The NiteBus is a smart choice if you want to save money because the ticketprice is only ?1.40 per person.

    Train

Some people wonder often wonder if it is possible to travel via the underground from and to the airport, the answer is no, it isn't.There is however the possibility to travel via train towards the city. Every 30 minutes the train from the airport leaves from undergroundstation Aeropuerto(from terminal a shuttle bus service leaves to the trainstation), the stops where you can get off are Barcelona Sants, Passeig  de Gracia or Clot, there you can switch metro's and get to your final destination. The whole trainride will take approximately 25 minutes.

The other two airports where people often land when they want to get to Barcelona are Reus and Girona, A lot of people choose this because they fly cheap with ryan air or easyjet, they think that they are landing in Barcelona but the truth is that the only real Barcelona Airport is the one we just talked about, the Barcelona Airport.Reus and Girona are approximately 100 km located away from the city. But lets take a look for when you do land at one of those airports and need to get to the city centre. You can find the timetable for the train here.

    Reus Airport

When you arrive at Reus airport and you want to travel to Barcelona, you have two options, either by train, taxi, car or by bus.
First lets take a look at how you can get there by car.

    Car

You might think where am i going to get a car when i just arrived at a aiport with a plane. No worries, in the terminal of the airport there are a lot of car rental companies where you can decide to rent a car and go to Barcelona. This option is not advised though, it is very easy to get lost on your way and parking spaces can be too expensive for a rental car for a holiday. If you do decide to go with the car then it will take you about 90 minutes to reach Barcelona.

    Bus

There are busses who stop in front of the Reus airport and provide youw ith the opportunity to travel directly to Barcelona's Estacia sants station in 1.5 hours. This will cost you ?11,-.

    Train

The train is also a good option, first you will have to take a bus in front of the airport and travel to Reus coach station.(20 min) there you can take a train to Barcelona, this will take 90 minutes. The price is about ?5,- .

    Taxi

At last you also off course can take a taxi to Barcelona city centre, this will be quicker the the other options, the downside though is that you pay about ? 170,- This is a bit too much when you decided to fly to reus with a cheap flight, that way it would have been better have just flown to Barcelona airport in the first place. So we can conclude that the best option is to travel by bus or train.

    Girona Airport

    Bus

Girona is Aiport is also located outside the city, about 100km from Barcelona. The best way to travel from Girona is by Bus, it goes directly to the city and costs ?21,- for a return. The bus will take you to Estacio d'autobuses Barcelona Nord. The undergroundstation Arc de triomf (red line l1) is very near and from there on you can easily get to your destination. You can see the time of the bus departures here, you can buy tickets at a Sagales booth at Girona airport.

    Train

If for some reason you end up unable to go to Barcelona with the bus then there are other solutions available. e.g. by train, you need a bus or taxi to get to the centrum of Girona where you can aboard a train that will take you directly to Barcelona.

    Taxi

The last option is to take a Taxi, this will take around 1.5 hour and will cost ?,-120, Maybe if you are a group of 4 people it can work because you can divide the bill between the four of you but otherwise the bus would be the best option.

So as you can see there a lot of ways of traveling to the Barcelona city centre, it depends a bit where youa re traveling from.In the end we recommend that you go to the Barcelona airport as it is the closest to the centre and therefore the most comfortable option. However if you decide to take the cheapest route and fly to Girona or Reus we reccomend that from there on you take the bus because it will be direct and also relatively cheap. The other options often cause for the total price of your journey ( Flight and travel towards your destination) to become too high and you would have been better off at the Barcelona airport. It depends a bit on your priorities what the best option is for you, but hopefully this information will help you make a selection and will help creating a good trip in Barcelona.

  • Parking in Barcelona - 14-10-2010
    {jfalternative}391|content|

    {/jfalternative}

Parking in BarcelonaParking your car in Barcelona may cause some problems .It is difficult to find parking facilities in the centre of Barcelona, and when you even find the parkingplaces they are often full or have limitations on space.

Finding a parking space can be quite annoying and has proven to be a difficult task for a lot of people. Lets take a look at how parking is arranged in Barcelona and what is the best way for you to park your car easily and what you need to take into consideration.

First of all the best tip that you can get about parking in Barcelona is do not bring a car!, Barcelona has a great public transport system, good clear underground connections that can bring you from a to be easy and fast. That way you avoid the parking troubles and be there even faster. Also above the ground there are a lot of busses and taxi's willing to take you where you need to go for a relatively low price.

Barcelona is even slowly becoming more of a bicycle city, in 2007 Barcelona's city counsil started a bicing service which means you can easily rent a bicycle and get around the city. Alot of people prefer this because they are quick to get where they want to be and get to see much of the city while inhaling the fresh air.

But lets say you still decide the best thing for you is to bring your car into the city, it would be useful to know how the parking issue is arranged in Barcelona. So first lets see how it works.First thing to take into consideration is if you are driving a car with a foreign plate. Obviously  a lot of people who decide to come to Barcelona are not from Spain so its safe to assume a lot of them drive a with a foreign plate on their car.The reason why this is important is because these cars are more then others targeted for robbery, so always keep your doors locked, windows closed and do not leave your valuable possessions in the car. Also try to park at a carpark that has camera surveillance, its not that they give guarentees but it is a lot safer then leaving it parked on a sidewalk. Car robberies do not happen a lot but it is important to keep in mind that there is always the possibility that it happens and therefore you should be prepared. Now lets take a look at the parking prices.

    Parking for 1 day

You will have the possibility to park at b:sm parks, this is a city counsil group that tries to improve Barcelona's infrastructure and is also rents bycicles all over the city. They have 46 car parks with over 17000 spaces to park in and it is the largest carpark network in Barcelona.

When you park at their carpark it is sometimes cheaper or they have special rates. (e.g. a 50% discount of your total stay). Here you can see all the places where you can park your car with b:sm.

    • It is possible to buy a prepaid card and use that to park your car at any b:sm park. the prices are:
    • 25 hours: 2.2 per hour: total price: ?54.9
    • 50 hours: 2.09 per hour: total price: ?104.7
    • 100 hours: 1.91 per hour: total price: ?191.20

Also if you want to park your car for one night a good option is parking at estacio del nord night because it is relatively cheap, ?15.90 for 24 hours.

    Parking for a week

Also for ?41 you can buy the p-month card which you can use to park up to 8 consecutive days(you can buy it at the carpark), but once the car is moved from the carpark the card will be no longer valid even if the parking period was less than 8 days. This is handy when you want to park your car and spend your days in Barcelona using the public transport.

There are 3 carparks at the entry pointsof the city where you can leave your car:

    • Plaça del Fòrum - Pl. d'Ernest Lluch i Martin (08005)
    • Sant Genís Vall d'Hebron - Pg. de la Vall d'Hebron, 138-176 (08035)
    • Rius i Taulet Fira - Av. de la Reina Maria Cristina, 16 (08004)

It is also possible to park at the airport, the airport has 11.911 spaces available.

    Parking for a month

Another card you can use is another p-month card, the card costs 41 Euro per month and gives you the opportunity to park 12 hours a day in 3 different carparks from monday until saturday. That way you can store your car the entire month. The 3 lots where you can leave your car at are the same as listed above at the entry points of the city.

Parking at estacio del nord is a smart choice if you want to leave your car there for one night because it is relatively cheap, ?15.90 for 24 hours.

In the end the best thing is to use the public transport to go from A to B, its fast, normally priced and simple. If you are coming to Barcelona with your car you can store it at one of the parking lots at the entry points of the city and take a bus from there to the city.If you want to come to the city centre keep in mind that it is very crowded and buildings have a lot of sharp cornerns, which means if you are driving a big car it might cause you some troubles.Parking in the centre is possible in various carparks  via the ways listed above, for more information on the parking in Barcelona, prices and special offers you can take a look here. Hopefully this will help making your stay in Barcelona more comfortable.

Wifi hotspotsWhen you are walking around in Barcelona it is nice to sit down somewhere and relax a bit. when you want to go online during that time it can sometimes be more difficult then expected. There are a lot of places where they have WiFi in Barcelona. The problem is that you need to search a bit before you can find it.

This has proven to be a bit annoying for people, obviously you can go online in the hotel you are in or go to a internetcafe where you need to pay. But a lot of people want to have the opportunity to just sit in the sun or on a terrace and go online there.

Paying 4 Euro for a coffee might be a bit to much if you just want to use your internet for a few minutes. Thats why Barcelona city council came up with a plan. It is a programme of free WiFi.These WiFi spots are called "WiFi hotspots", these hotspots allow people with mobile devices such as a Blackberry Iphone or Laptop PDA's to go online for free all over the centre in Barcelona.

Once you are near a Barcelona WiFi Hotspot you can easily make a connection. The password that you need to have access is "Barcelona WiFi".
Here you can find all the WiFi hotspots in Barcelona where you can make a connection to the internet for free.

Although this can be really handy and nice for some, but there are sometimes when you just want to sit inside and go online while you are having a drink or enjoying a meal.Or it could be raining, although it does not occur often in Barcelona it is always good to know where you can get WiFi inside.

So we decided to put that list on here aswell to broaden the possibilities of people wanting to go online.

There is also a possibilty of WiFi sms, that way you will receive a sms telling you what the closest WiFispot is where you can go online.Just text the sentence " WiFi  "zipcode" " to 7010 and you will receive the information. It can be a bit difficult because as a tourist how can you know the zipcode? for that information you just have to ask a local person on the street or in a shop or a bar, that is the quickest way.

If you want more information on how WiFi hotspots work you can check it out here.Hopefully this will help making your stay in Barcelona more comfortable and pleasant.

  • Bullfighting in Catalunya - 16-09-2010
    {jfalternative}375|content|
    There are no translations available.
    {/jfalternative}

Bullfighting  is a traditional spectacle of Spain, Portugal, southern France and several Latin American countries, in which one or more bulls are ritually killed in a bullring  as a public spectacle. It is often called a blood sport by its detractors but followers of the spectacle regard it as a fine art and not a sport as there are no elements of competition in the proceedings. In Portugal it is illegal to kill a bull in the arena, so it is removed and slaughtered in the pens as fighting bulls can only be used once. A nonlethal variant stemming from Portuguese influence is also practiced on the Tanzanian island of Pemba.

Many supporters of bullfighting regard it as a deeply ingrained, integral part of their national cultures. The aesthetic of bullfighting is based on the interaction of the man and the bull. Rather than a competitive sport, the bullfight is more of a ritual which is judged by aficionados (bullfighting fans) based on artistic impression and command. Ernest Hemingway said of it in his 1932 non-fiction book Death in the Afternoon: "Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honour." Bullfighting is seen as a symbol of Spanish culture.
The bullfight is above all about the demonstration of style, technique and courage by its participants. While there is usually no doubt about the outcome, the bull is not viewed as a sacrificial victim?it is instead seen by the audience as a worthy adversary, deserving of respect in its own right.

Despite this, animal rights campaigners celebrate as Spain's most emblematic sport is banned by Catalan parliament starting in 2012.
Demonstrators gathered outside the Catalan parliament in Barcelona before legislators voted to outlaw the sport in one of Spain's most famous semi-autonomous regions.

    {/jfalternative}

One of Marcel Martís sculpturesMarcel Martí was a noted catalan sculptor and artist. Despite his forays into geometric abstraction and its contacts with the neoconstructivismo in his early work, Marcel Martí is considered a sculptor linked to the informality of his expressionist works.

In his works he is a palpable influence of the great sculptors of our time (Moore, Zadkine, Julio González). In his sculptures he uses different materials: iron, bronze, limestone, marble, clay, wood, or steel cut polymethylmethacrylate. His most characteristic works are organic sculptures reminiscent in some ways the Catalan Modernism. They combine elements of concave and convex lines ever more simple and pure, evident the importance of volume and the pursuit of perfection in the bill.

He was born on March 8, 1897 Argentina to Catalan parents. In 1928 he returned to Barcelona. Marcel started drawing at age 17, and soon gave up college to devote himself to painting. Seeing his first drawings, the painter Pere Prat Ubach offered to give private lessons. In 1946 his father decided to give him a studio attached to the family business.

In 1948 Marcel Martí held his first exhibition in Barcelona in the Sala Caralt which was a wild success and enabled him to travel to Paris, where he joined the city's artistic circles. In the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere he recieved lessons from Ossip Zadkine, André Lhote and Paul Bornet.

In 1950 he traveled to Sweden and Italy, where he was impressed by the work of Michelangelo. Three years later he participated in the group exhibition "Contemporary Art", in Chile, and the Municipal Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Alver dedicated himself mostly to sculpture from this point on.

He participated in the II Bienal Hispano and VIII Salón de Barcelona in October 1955. After a figurative period, from 1958 he moved towards abstraction.

That year he received the Manolo Hugué prize for sculpture , and was selected for the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He participated in the informal tribute to Velazquez "at the Sala Gaspar de Barcelona with Canogar, Millares, Corberó, Ferrant, Narotzky, Planell, Rafols-Casamada, Saura, Sempere, Subirachs and Vilacasas.

In 1959 he presented his first exhibition of sculptures in the Barcelona Syra gallery. From that time he changed his style, exploring natural and symbolic forms.

In 1961 his sculpture is installed in a garden of Montbau, Barcelona; other selected artists in the same initiative are Subirachs, and Eudald Serra Angel Ferrant. This piece is his first monumental work. Participates in group "O figure" and "Object" in the Sala Gaspar de Barcelona.

The following year he opened the exhibition at Galerie Escoda Grifé and Barcelona. Participated in a group at the Marlborough Gallery in London and International Sala of Contemporary Art in the same city. Two years later he performed solo exhibitions at the Friendship Circle in Cordoba, in the Sala del Prado in Madrid and in Barcelona Galería René Metras. He was also invited to the "Week of Spain" in Rabat, the "Exhibition of Spanish Art" in Mexico, "Contemporary Spanish Art" in Helsinki, "22 Spanish Artists" in Fez and the XXXII Venice Biennale.

In 1966 he took part in the Exhibition of Contemporary Sculpture at the Rodin Museum in Paris and at the Art Centre in Milan. A year later, a solo exhibition at the Gallery Lorenzelli of Bergamo.

    {/jfalternative}

Olympics 1992The Olympic Games the most celebrated and spectacular multi-cultural and multi-sports event in the world took place in Barcelona in the year 1992. The summer games started July 25th and lasted until August 9th were to become an event with many changes and wonderful developments.

For the first time in history since 1972 the games could be held without any boycotts and various nations could send their own teams for the first time due to the fall of the Soviet Union, e.g. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Also, Germany could send its first united team to the Olympics for the first time in history since 1964 due to the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. Furthermore, South Africa that had been suspended from participation due to the Apartheid system in 1960 was allowed to compete for the first time since then.

The Games took place all over the city with the Olympic stadium (where the opening and closing ceremonies were held) as well as the swimming facilities being located on the Montjuic hill with view over all of the city of Barcelona and the sea. The Olympic Village was located in Poblenou, a neighbourhood directly next to the ocean and the beaches of Barcelona.
The Games brought a lot of change to the Catalonian capital. Before the local government had widely neglected many parts of the city such as the beaches, parks and green areas. All of these were reconstructed, renewed or completely replaced which led Barcelona to shine in a completely new, beautiful and modern light once the Games had started. It also gave the city a huge boost in terms of tourism and ever since then Barcelona has become one of the most popular destinations for sightseeing in Spain.
Even though the Olympics lie almost 20 years back in the past now, one can still admire the stadium, the Olympic museum and remaining facilities and the city has not lost any of the newly acquired fame and beauty since then.

Public Pools BarcelonaBarcelona is directly located next to the ocean; however, not everybody likes to dip into the salty and dark water of the sea and therefore the city also offers a variety of public swimming pools that can be a nice, less salty alternative to the ocean.

The most famous public swimming pool in Barcelona that is not to be missed is located on Montjuic and is a remainder of the Olympic Games that took place in the city in 1992. It offers 3 indoor pools, one outdoor pool and various spa facilities.
